Rheumatoid Arthritis: A Case Study

By:  Nancy Radice, M. Ac., Dipl. OM; L. Acu.                  Nicole  5/3/07

Nicole is a 25 year old woman who was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) 6 years ago. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease in which the immune system loses its ability to tell the difference between foreign invaders (such as bacteria and virus) and the body‘s normal cells. It begins to attack the body’s normal cells too. This can cause the lining, or synovium of the joints to become inflamed. It can lead to long-term joint damage, resulting in chronic pain, loss of function and disability.

Nicole’s symptoms included pain in her knees, hands and ankles which made it difficult for her to carry on her life as a busy medical student.

Since RA is an autoimmune disorder, I chose to treat Nicole with a combination of NAET-allergy elimination technique and acupuncture. We started with a course of treatments to clear the basic 15 allergens with hopes to bring her immune system back into balance. After clearing her body’s adverse reactions to substances such as Egg (proteins), Calcium, Vitamin C, B, and Sugar, she is almost completely pain free except for an occasional flare up due to overexertion. Within 12 treatments and 3 months, Nicole was able to take herself completely off prednisone. I am so proud of Nicole and her progress!

Here’s what Nicole has to say about her acupuncture experience:

After living with RA for 6 years and trying an assortment of medicine, I was willing to try anything. My brother recommended acupuncture to me and I thought, can’t hurt to try. So in January 2007, I began acupuncture treatments twice a week. I was a bit skeptical at first, since the treatment involved a type of medicine I was not familiar with. However, I knew everything took time. By mid-March, I was feeling better, more energized and less stiff. I was able to go to the gym and exercise, and stop all medications, including prednisone which I had been trying to wean off for a year. Nowadays, I have friends who tell me they see the difference in my energy levels and are willing to try acupuncture for their own health. As of today, I am on no daily medication and have started running. I hope to continue with my acupuncture treatment so that I can be off of medications completely and run a 5 K marathon, feeling healthy, energized and pain free. All in good time….
